5 Best Custom Closet Makers in Vancouver That Will Make You Ditch IKEA Forever

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Design Customization: We evaluated how flexible and personalized each company’s design process was. Versatility is considered as well, from classic designs to modern aesthetics in closets.
  • Consultation Process: Our team considered how friendly, professional, and comprehensive the consultation experience was. We looked into companies that offer free or low-cost in-home visits, 3D mock-ups, and collaborative planning.
  • Value for Money: We compare how transparent each company was with their pricing and whether the results justified the cost. Hidden fees and vague estimates were a no-go for us.
  • Turnaround Time: We assessed how long the company typically takes to complete a project. There are serious points for those who can deliver quickly without compromising quality.
  • After-Sales Support: We evaluated the kind of post-installation support each company provided. In particular, we looked into warranties and responsive customer service.

We all know what it’s like buying furniture from big stores, right? They come in boxes with parts and accessories that you have to build on your own. And what happens when you lose a screw? Well, let’s just say it’s a hell of a headache!

We’re sure you can relate one way or another, so we decided to help. In the last few weeks, we’ve been visiting showrooms and interviewing clients to find the absolute best closet makers in the city.

Our insights are fueled by market research and comparisons from our research team. So if you’re excited, take a deep dive into our top selections!

What we liked about Clever Quarters is that their process is streamlined, earning our favor for consistency. Everything starts with an in-house consultation before moving to a collaborative 3D design phase.

We were satisfied seeing that their customization is flexible, considering that they can make anything from kid-friendly concepts to walk-in closet systems. We just wish that they would notify clients whenever potential delays start to come up.

Another area where they shine is material quality, with components sourced from Canada, Europe, and the US. But what’s even greater is that custom pieces are made in-house, allowing for tighter quality control.

Finally, they have a lifetime warranty, which is a significant perk for all clients.

Pros

  • Fully custom closet solutions
  • Wide range of closet types
  • Streamlined process
  • In-house manufacturing facility
  • Quality materials from Canada, Europe, and US
  • Lifetime warranty on products

Cons

  • Poor communication of delays
  • No status updates unless requested

Outstanding workmanship

“Fantastic professional customer service from the first phone call to the end result. Outstanding. Our tech installed his and hers reach in closets. He finished and was in the middle of cleaning up then noticed there were some imperfections in the wood. This wasn’t good enough for him or clever quarters. Phone call was made, both units removed, replacement units showed up within and hour and done deal. Would recommend this company to anyone that requires custom closet/storage solutions. There’s a reason they have nothing below a 5 star review.”

Purposeful design

“Highly recommend clever quarters! Kasia the designer worked very closely with me to design the shelving for our pantry and cabinetry for our mudroom. She made sure every detail was purposeful and really listened to my needs and wishes. I loved all the ideas she provided to make most use of our space. The installation was also seamless – the crew that came were professional and made sure the finishing touches were done right. Thank you so much to the team!”

We liked that California Closets’ process starts with a free 2-hour design consultation. We find it comprehensive enough, especially for clients who want creative input from the get-go.

Our team also found that they use sustainable, North American-sourced materials that are then built in their own facility. Beyond this, their limited lifetime warranty further gives peace of mind for this long-term investment.

Workmanship is a winning quality, too, as their installation team is made up of in-house employees. We feel positive about this, considering subcontractors won’t likely deliver the same speed as they can.

While we can find many great things about the results, the process itself isn’t always stress-free. For instance, we saw a few projects that were delayed because they had to be redesigned due to measurement mistakes.

At least, the majority of the clients do say that the money they pay is worth every penny.

Pros

  • Free 1 to 2 hours design consultation
  • Convenient Granville showroom location
  • Unlimited design revisions
  • Sources sustainable materials
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Offers future system adjustments

Cons

  • Minor reports of measurement errors
  • Minor reports of surcharges

Professional and friendly

“This is our third customization project with California Closets. Our consultant, Sue, designed an office space and walk-in-closet for our new home. As we worked with Sue on a previous project, we were familiar with her good work and happy to work with her again. Everyone was professional and friendly. Any concerns we had were resolved. We are pleased with our new closet and office and highly recommend California Closets.”

What we particularly liked about CosyCloset is their broad selection of materials and finishes. They use quality components and premium hardware, which makes customization possible.

To be specific, this allows for options like integrated lighting, accessories, and functional features (e.g. soft soft-close systems).

Upon on-site evaluations, we left with the knowledge that their installation process was clear and efficient. Even clients supported our impressions, with most of them noting that they minimized the disruptions in their homes.

That said, not all feedback was glowing – we found that they sometimes charge unexpectedly for materials, which was allegedly due to a design miscommunication.

We hope to see improvements soon, as they do have solid initiatives too. They have a charitable partner called Backpack Buddies, where they make donations to children for every project completed.

Pros

  • Locally crafted materials
  • Wide range of finishes and hardware
  • Custom accessories available
  • Fast and clean installation
  • Free consultation and estimates

Cons

  • Minor reports of surprise material charges
  • Small miscommunication issues

Fast and superb quality

“We’ve been looking for a way to utilise the free wall space just next to the patio door. We don’t know which company will be able to help us until we saw Cosy Closet’s display at 2023 Fall Home Show. Atbin is every experience and gave us a lot of good advice when we finalised our requirement. The installation is quick and the quality is superb. We’ll definitely recommend Cosy Closet to our friends.”

Excellent service

When it comes to experience, we have to give it to Vancouver Closets. The numbers don’t lie – they have 21 years of experience and have completed about 1,250 projects as of writing.

One thing that earned our favor is their end-to-end control. Unlike many competitors that outsource installation, their team is 100% trained in-house, which ensures consistent workmanship.

In line with this, we favor the idea that they deliver straight from their own factory. Through this, timelines are often sped up, without unnecessary markups of rates

Speaking of rates, our team compared estimates and find that theirs aer competitive. They also don’t have the tendency to oversell with luxury additions, which we find great for clients on a budget.

We did encounter reports that a few clients were forgotten during consultations. However, this is the only negative we came across, suggesting that it may be an isolated case.

Pros

  • 21+ years of experience
  • Over 1,250 complete projects
  • Competitive pricing
  • In-house professionals
  • Direct delivery from factory
  • Fast turnaround time

Cons

  • Few reports on missed schedules
  • Little post-installation support

Knows what clients want

“Toby, Esta and the whole team been so helpful. Customer service was above and beyond. I love my closet now as I searched for so long and Esta came along and knows exactly what I wanted. Thank you So much and looking forward for more home improvements with you. Will surely get you again for my closets or cabinets renovation in the future.”

Patient in the process

“We had our kitchen cabinets done here. Asta is really nice and patient in helping us throughout the design process and the team were helpful when there were minor issues from installation. The cabinets looked really good and great quality too!”

Similar to most companies, STOR-X’s process starts with a free consultation. But what we liked is the fact that clients can choose to do this either in-person or virtually.

The design process is also user-friendly: the consultant brings samples directly to the home, takes measurements, and discusses storage needs. Clients can then enjoy a wide range of customization options, particularly for accessories (e.g. valet rods, jewelry drawers, etc.).

As for the components, manufacturing takes place locally, which means faster turnaround times. In fact, we estimated that their projects are usually completed in half a day, already including the clean-up.

While we didn’t experience any mishaps on our end, we did note that a few clients had a hard time communicating with them. This is usually the case whenever they’re scheduling a consultation.

It appears to be a small percentage of complaints, though we remind that consistent follow-ups may help.

Pros

  • Free initial consultation
  • In-store, virtual, and home visit options available
  • Real-time design adjustments if necessary
  • Wide selection of accessories and finishes
  • Locally made products
  • Fast installation

Cons

  • Occasional communication issues
  • Requires large deposit before the build phase

Smooth from start to finish

“From start to finish, the whole process with Stor-X went smoothly. They designed exactly what we had in our mind for our custom pantry and communication was awesome all the way through to installation. Plus they were very reasonably priced compared to other companies we contacted. Will definitely use them again.”

-Jodie Hebbard | Google Reviews

Positive experience

“Working with StorX was a very positive experience. The initial consult was prompt. Modifications and changes to the preliminary drawings were easy. Accommodations for a delay in installation on our part were handled well. The install crew were friendly and professional. The install process went smoothly. We are very pleased with the end result.”
